2008 Rocks!

On the 10th January the Portland Arms plays host to what looks to be the first good Cambridge gig of 2008. It's a 'tips for 2008' kinda night if you like, and brilliant Birmingham indie types Johnny Foreigner are headlining.
The future looks bright for the trio, who, with Los Campesinos!, are set to take the indie world by storm in 2008. In support are the wonderful 4 or 5 Magicians, and eccentric Manchester instrumentalists Cats In Paris.
Take a look at this Johnny Foreigner video for proof of their genius.

Grouper

As a polar opposite to the rather-noisy Rolo Tomassi show last week (thanks to all that came down by the way), the next gig comes courtesy of American ambient artist Grouper. Combining shoegaze, drone and folk music, Liz Harris' compositions are wholly original affairs. There is a tendency to dismiss much 'ambient' music as dull and sleepy, but that criticism could never be leveled at Harris' music. On her brilliant and very sold-out record Cover The Windows And The Walls, she takes the dream-pop sound as played out by Cocteau Twins and Slowdive but distorts it, slows it down, and records it through tape hiss.

Check out an mp3 from said album:

and a video from her collaboration with Xiu Xiu...

In some kind of magical partnership with Crushing Death, Grouper play CB2 in Cambridge on November 14th.
Support comes from the lovely Gareth Hardwick , and Felix.
